Gran Paradiso (4061m/13,320ft) is Italy's only 4000 metre
summit and dominates the impressive mountain massif of the same
name.
After a night in Chamonix, we drive across the border to beautiful
Valgrisenche, to begin our 6 days of high-level trekking and
easy climbing. Most of this tranquil region is within a national
park and remains largely free of ski lifts and other intrusive
tourist development. Wildlife, such as ibex, chamois and marmots
are commonly seen.
Each night we stay in a different mountain refuge and enjoy
good food and Italian hospitality. Our route takes us across
3000 metre/ 9000 foot passes and by way of several straightforward
viewpoint summits. From the Refugio Vittorio Emanuele we make
the classic, easy snow face and rocky ridge ascent to the summit
of Gran Paradiso, where the views extend northwards to the central
Alps and the prominent Mont Blanc.
This is one of Europe's finest mountaineering routes and our
easiest Alpine climbing trip.
