Who we are

Alpine Dreams was born in 1995 at instigation of Dominique Fellay, professional mountain guide (UIAGM/IFMGA certified). Based in the heart of the Swiss Alps in the Canton Valais, in the region of Sion, Alpine Dreams will be happy to assist you with its unique expertise and guide you in the entire Alps, from the Mediterranean Sea to the borders of Austria, but also towards other horizons such as South America, Africa or Alaska.

Dominique has led his clients during almost twenty years in all alpine massifs. Traveler in the soul, he has also been able to guide them to more distant summits, in Latin America (Aconcagua and in Patagonia: Paine and Fitz Roy) and in Alaska (Mt McKinley, Denali). These escapades have enrich his alpine experience by completing it with a wide knowledge and experience of high altitude climbing techniques. His taste for adventure led him aswell into the deserts of Northern Africa, in Morocco, and southward under the sky of South Africa and Namibia. Each of these journeys has been the occasion to meet more people and build a guiding network worldwide.

We sincerely hope that one day; one of our projects will be yours and that you will give us the chance to share our enthusiasm and experience.

All our guides are professionals, whom you can count on for their solid technical background but aswell for their great human experience. They all are fully certified by the UIAGM/IFMGA. If the technical competence is one of the hand hold of the guide, his personality and his enthusiasm, will give to your adventure and to your memories a touch of greatness of man without which a climb cannot be a complete success. Our guides are chosen as their passion is still intact and their desire to share its essence with you...

What about the UIAGM/IFMGA

In 1965 in Zermatt (Switzerland) representatives of the mountain guides associations from Italy, France, Austria and Switzerland decided to lay the foundations for an international federation of all mountain guides associations. First statutes in 1966.

The purposes of the federation are :

  · Adjustment of the laws of the mountain guides by promoting a uniform professional training as possible, in order to facilitate the practice of the mountain guide occupation abroad. Among other things by issuing a common international document of identification.

  · When needed to give an arbitral tribunal, that has advisory function, and serves as mediate in case of points of issue between members and third parties.

  · To study problems of general and economic nature affecting the occupation of mountain guides.

  · To order to arrange closer comradeship and the exchange of ideas amongst the mountain guides of all nations.

American Mountain Guides Association (AMGA) has gained its admission to the International Federation of Mountain Guide Associations (IFMGA, aka UIAGM) in 1997. This verified that AMGA training programs meet the world standard.

The IFMGA Mountain Guide Certification grants individuals who have achieved Ski Mountaineering Guide Certification, Level II Rock Guide Certification and Alpine Guide Certification. This represents the minimum standard for guide training as established by the IFMGA.

How to choose a Mountain Guide

Historically, in the US, training of professional mountain guides has been very loosely organized. While some guide services conduct their own in-house training, few guides have any formal, consistent and comprehensive training.

As a result, anyone can hang up a sign and claim to be a guide.

In Europe and Switzerland, the historical situation is different since full UIAGM/IFMGA has been mandatory for guiding since 1970. All guides are officially checked for their insurance coverage as well as their follow up in continuous formation.

Getting out of potentially dangerous situation calls upon a guide's expertise and training. Although risk can never be eliminated, proper training can help minimize it. Climbing skills alone are not enough. Guiding experience and training, as well as evaluation of guiding-specific skills, are essential to maximize competency and greatly reduce potential hazards.

How do you select the right guide ?

Ask the following questions in addition to considering Certification and Accreditation :

  · What are the company's guide training requirements ?

  · What are the company's medical training requirements ?

  · Does the person or guide service have insurance ?

  · Will the person or guide service provide a list of previous clients as a reference ?

  · How long has the person been guiding or how long has the guide service been in operation ?

  · Has the company had any accidents, and if so, why ?

  · If the trip will take place outside the guide's home base, how familiar is he or she with the destination ?
